Start here

Your first recording

  1. Choose what to record

    Open File > Record Screen… or press Command-Shift-R. Choose Display, Window, App or Area. For Area, drag inside to move the rectangle, drag a corner to resize, or drag outside to redraw. Choose Use selected area when ready.

  2. Allow macOS access

    If asked, enable Neocodec in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording. macOS may ask you to quit and reopen the app. Return to the recording toolbar and choose your source again.

  3. Check audio, then record

    Review the source and audio choices. Press Record, wait for the countdown and look for Recording. Use Pause and Resume to leave waiting time out of the clip.

  4. Stop and check the file

    Press Stop and wait for Recording saved. Choose Play to review the clip. Move the preview by its title bar or resize it from an edge; the video keeps its proportions.

Sound is your choice

System audio.
Microphone.
Or neither.

System audio and microphone are separate choices. Both are off on first use; Neocodec remembers later choices. Check them before every take. Choose a named microphone for narration. macOS may request microphone permission when you press Record.

Window and App capture can include sound from other windows of the selected app. Display and Area system audio can include other apps. A small capture rectangle does not limit the audio to that rectangle.

Activity meters show the audio coming in while recording. Check the saved clip before relying on its sound. A microphone can also pick up your speakers.

From capture to clip

Save it.
Then finish it.

Recordings save as H.264 MP4 in Movies/Neocodec Recordings by default. Choose another recording folder in Options > Recording options…. This destination is separate from your conversion output settings.

Trim… opens the trim editor. Convert… prepares an H.264 conversion. Review the file and settings, then start the job. To make a GIF, AV1 or WebM copy, choose that conversion format after saving.

Add to Neocodec stages the original without changing the currently selected action. Transcribe… prepares optional transcription, which has its own API key, upload approval and provider costs. None of these handoffs starts an upload or conversion by itself.

Your files

Choose where the recording goes.

Recording does not upload your screen or audio to Neocodec or a transcription service. Files go to the folder you choose. A cloud-synced or network folder may transfer them according to that service's settings. Transcription remains a separate action with its own approval.

If a save is interrupted, Neocodec keeps available recovery parts. Use Unfinished recordings or Retry saving after fixing the destination problem. Keep recovery files; an incomplete or missing part cannot always be repaired.
